Myopia Affects Adults, Too!
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error that affects the ability to see distances clearly. It can occur when the eye grows too long or if the cornea becomes too steep.
Children can develop myopia during their school years, and it can have an effect on their performance at school and playing sports. It can progress over time and even become high myopia in adulthood.
High myopia can increase the risk of other issues for adults, like developing glaucoma, cataracts, or experiencing retinal detachment. Getting in front of the issue early can help manage the risk of high myopia and preserve vision in adults.
Does Your Child Have Myopia?
Myopia generally develops during your child’s school years, but it can be difficult for them to tell if they’re struggling with their vision. The best way to know if there’s an issue is by booking regular eye exams, but there are some signs to look for that may show myopia developing, like:
- Being close to object to see
- Sitting in front of the classroom

Our Myopia Control Strategies
Personalizing your child’s myopia control strategy is all about determining how quickly their symptoms develop, how myopia affects their life, and making sure their strategy is simple and easy to follow. There is no cure for myopia, but following our strategies could help preserve your child’s clear vision.
We offer a few different ways to help control myopia, and can personalize our techniques even further once we examine your child’s myopia and how it may develop. The most common techniques we use include orthokeratology contact lenses, MiSight contact lenses, and atropine eye drops.
Orthokeratology Contact Lenses
Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is a specialty contact lens popular for controlling myopia development in children.
What makes these lenses different is that they’re worn at night while your child sleeps. During this time, the lens gently reshapes their cornea to correct their vision, which can also slow myopia development.
When your child wakes up, they can remove the lenses and enjoy clear vision throughout the day without the need for any corrective lenses!
MiSight Multifocal Contact Lenses
Multifocal contact lenses are popular for correcting refractive errors like astigmatism and presbyopia, but a few types of multifocals could help control your child’s myopia development.
MiSight contact lenses, specifically designed for myopia control, use a technique called “peripheral defocusing” to keep your child’s central sight clear while focusing peripheral light just in front of their retina. Focusing light in this way sends a signal to slow down myopia progression.
Atropine Eye Drops
Eye drops with low doses of atropine can also slow down myopia progression in children. We can determine your child’s daily dosage when you and your child visit us for a myopia appointment.
