Your eyes are a complex combination of systems all working together to provide you with sight, like your retina, macula, and optic nerve. However, certain diseases and conditions can affect these systems, potentially changing your vision or even causing vision loss.

Optical Coherence Tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique we use to observe your retina’s health. These devices generate cross-sectional images of your retina and its various areas, like your macula, optic nerve, and retinal blood vessels.
OCT images can help our team detect glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic eye diseases.
Axial Length Biometry
Axial biometry is an imaging technique we use to get a comprehensive look at virtually every area of your eye, from the cornea to deep layers of your retina.
These images can help us determine your cornea’s thickness, vitreous length, anterior chamber depth, and more. Axial biometry can help us detect issues like keratoconus and glaucoma or fit a variety of specialty contact lenses.
Tonometry
Tonometry is a technique we use to measure your eye’s internal pressure, also known as intraocular pressure or IOP. Measuring your IOP levels is a common way our team can detect early signs of glaucoma.
At Integrated Vision Associates, we use Goldmann applanation tonometry—the gold standard for accurately measuring IOP levels. These devices measure your IOP by gently pressing a small probe against the surface of your eye and calculating the resistance.
Corneal Topography
Corneal topography is a common tool we use to help fit contact lenses, but it can also be used to detect issues affecting your cornea, like keratoconus.
Our corneal topography device analyzes your cornea to create a 3D map of its curvature.
Common Eye Diseases & Conditions
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that affect your optic nerve. Most types of glaucoma can occur alongside rising or unstable IOP levels, but others can develop even when your IOP is in a normal range. We can detect glaucoma by measuring your IOP or by observing your optic disc.
The 3 most common types of glaucoma are:
- Open-angle glaucoma, which can develop when blockages form in your eye’s drainage system, slowly raising your IOP levels.
- Closed-angle glaucoma, which can occur when your eye’s drainage canal closes, causing your IOP levels to rise rapidly.
- Normal-tension glaucoma, which can affect your optic nerve even when your IOP is with stable or normal ranges.
Open-angle glaucoma is the most common version of the disease and can develop for years without affecting your vision. Closed-angle glaucoma, however, can occur rapidly and cause sudden emergency symptoms like nausea, eye pain, redness, and vision loss.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Age-related macular degeneration, also known as AMD, is a common eye disease many adults over 55 can develop.
AMD affects your macula, the centermost part of your retina responsible for providing your central vision. As AMD develops, it could affect the vision you use to read and see fine details.
There are 2 types of AMD:
- Dry AMD, which can occur when small lipid deposits form underneath your macula, slowly thinning it over time.
- Wet AMD, which can occur when abnormal blood vessels form underneath your macula that can easily break and damage your macula.
Wet AMD may cause sudden vision loss, and should be treated as an eye emergency.
Diabetic Eye Diseases
Diabetes can increase the risk of several types of eye diseases and conditions, like open-angle glaucoma and cataracts, but it can also lead to diseases like diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. Over time, both of these diseases can lead to permanent vision loss.

Cataracts
As you grow older, proteins in your eye’s lens can break down and clump together, causing the lens to become more rigid and opaque. This problem, known as a cataract, is one of the most common age-related eye conditions and can lead to blindness if left untreated.
Cataract surgery can remove cataract lenses and restore your vision, and prescription lenses can help correct vision problems caused by early cataracts.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus is an eye condition characterized by slowly thinning cornea tissue. As these tissues thin, the cornea can bulge forward, leading to irritation, poorer vision quality, and difficulty wearing contact lenses.
Just because 2 people have the same diagnosis doesn’t mean they experience it the same way.
Our treatment strategies are personalized to your specific needs. We may be able to address certain issues with medications or prescription lenses, but we may also recommend nutritional changes or even surgery depending on the problem.
